Bambi

(British b. 1982)

I let my work speak for itself. But dreams can inspire me, and I am particularly interested in people who spread love and joy.
— Bambi

Anonymous street artist and provocateur, Bambi, is recognized for her stenciled graffiti and various works across London. Her aesthetically gritty, masculine stencils often feature known contemporary figures to offer sharp social and political commentary, as well as herself. She has produced highly visible and public murals incorporating The Royal Family, Amy Winehouse, David Beckham, Ai Wei Wei, Theresa May, and Donald Trump. Her work addresses political and social injustice including climate change and contemporary female identity and its relationship to patriarchal culture with satirical irony and wit.

Bambi’s identity is a well-guarded secret withholding much information about her personal life, leading to her being called “the female Banksy.” She has stated that she studied at the City & Guilds of London Art School in Kennington, South London before gaining an MA from St. Martin’s School of Art. In a 2012 interview, she said she was born in Liverpool Road at Angel, brought up in Hoxton, and now lives in a flat in central Islington. She also mentioned that she was in her 30s, and that "Bambi" comes from her childhood family nickname "Bambino."

In 2013, The Sun tabloid reportedly spoke to a confidante of Bambi’s, who apparently divulged that she is also a recognizable, internationally famous singing star. Lenny Villa, Bambi’s manager, confirmed that she is a “superstar” and many of us will have her records, but would not reveal who she is. “All I can say is that she has had to go into hiding because of all the fuss,” he said.

In 2014, Artnet news named Bambi as one of their Top 20 Art World Women of 2014, a list including singer Beyoncé and artist Marina Abramovic. Collectors of her work include Rihanna, Brad Pitt, Adele, Robbie Williams, and Take That's Mark Owen.
