Jean-Claude Picot
(French, b. 1933)
The art world knows Jean-Claude Picot as one of the greatest French landscape painters of the 20th century. His scenes of leisure and memorable retreats burst with relaxation and romance. His brush strokes are wildly expressive and he employs bright, spirit-raising, Fauvist colors while his architectural, landscape, and figura elements are simplified. His balanced, harmonious compositions are instantly identifiable and allow the viewer a luxurious escape with every glance.
Picot was born in 1933 and started exhibiting at age 14. He works largely in a Post-Impressionist style with Fauvist influences. Post-Impressionism makes use of the bright colors the Impressionists would use in giving their best optical impression of nature, but sometimes uses them in unnatural ways for effect, and also uses more expressive lines, forms and brushstrokes, reducing them to their most fundamental. Fauvism, a form of expressionism and distant extension of Post-Impressionism, made a splash in the early 20th century with radical use of color, abstract form, and texture, and the influence of Fauvist masters like Matisse, Vlaminck, and Derain is visible in Picot’s work. He works in a variety of mediums including oil, acrylic, watercolor, etching, ceramic, and serigraphy, and has been the solo exhibitor in over fifty shows around the world. He spends most of his time in places that stimulate him, like in the bright light of the Cote d’Azur. His work is in prestigious collections worldwide and is a favorite of collectors internationally.
